I attend twice weekly meetings to consider the red, amber or green risk rating for the people we work with, in addition to weekly multidisciplinary team meetings. My manager refers people to me to work with and I meet them at our team base, in their own homes or in peer support groups.

OT support workers may help people to use aids and equipment, including assistive technology. Assistive technology helps profoundly disabled people communicate, use IT, get about and control household services and equipment (lights, TV, etc). I initially joined a charity called VoiceAbility as a peer support worker who helped me complete the Mental Health Peer Coach Training programme. I also volunteered at a mental health hospital as a response volunteer for the NHS, where I further developed my skills and knowledge in mental health.

Peer support workers are people who use their lived experience of mental health problems to support others. A national training programme is being developed which will be delivered by people with lived experience, with support from the NHS, to help individuals develop the skills they need to be a peer support worker.

As for tips, if you like working with people, want to make a real difference, and have lived experience of mental health, I would say that you should become a peer support worker. You can really see how you can improve people’s lives in what you do.
